As I reflect on my journey over the past several years, I sometimes think of it as an awakening, or maybe stepping outside of what we could call the Matrix.
I feel deeply that I am not the only person who feels this way.
There is actually a lot about the movie The Matrix that resonates with me now in a way it probably would not have years ago. Not necessarily the literal storyline, but the idea that we move through life surrounded by systems, expectations, beliefs, and conditioning that shape how we understand the world and how we live our lives.
The Matrix can exist in many forms. It can be what we were taught success should look like, what our families expected of us, what our careers required from us, or simply all of the outside influences telling us what we should want and how our lives are supposed to unfold.
Most of us participate in it because that is life. We build careers, raise families, meet responsibilities, follow routines, and make decisions within the world around us.
But sometimes something happens that pulls us outside of it.
For me, that happened through a major change in my life. When the path I thought I was following was disrupted, I suddenly had a very different relationship with time, with myself, and with the things I had come to know as my truth.
Once you step outside of your normal rhythm, even temporarily, you start noticing things differently.
There is a scene in The Matrix when Neo sees the white rabbit and instinctively knows to follow it. He does not know exactly where it will lead or why it matters. Something about it simply catches his attention. As I watched the movie again, I could almost feel his gut instinct, his knowing that whatever was on the other side of following this women, would be exactly what he needed.
I think life gives us our own versions of the white rabbit.
Sometimes it is a hunch. Sometimes it is an image, a song, a conversation, a person you meet, a book someone mentions, or an idea that suddenly catches your attention. There may be no obvious reason for it to feel significant, but something inside you says, pay attention to this.
I have started thinking of these moments as breadcrumbs from the Universe leading me toward rabbit holes that advance an idea or move me toward action.
I have followed a lot of rabbit holes over the last several years. I might start looking up one thing and somehow end up somewhere completely different. One topic leads to another, which leads to a person, a class, a book, an event, or a piece of information I did not even know I was looking for.
And surprisingly often, whatever I find on the other side is exactly what I needed.
One event leads to another, and eventually you look back and realize that what felt random at the time was part of a much larger thread.
That awareness has also changed the conversations I have with people.
As I have become more comfortable having deeper and more authentic conversations, I have started sharing more of these experiences. I talk about the synchronicities, the strange timing, the rabbit holes and the moments when something appeared in my life that seemed to connect perfectly with what I had been exploring.
What delights me is how often people open up to their own stories. I love to see the passion and curiosity in their eyes.
A chance conversation that led to an opportunity. A book that somehow came into their life at exactly the right moment. A person they felt drawn to meet. A decision that made very little sense on paper but felt completely right inside them.
Maybe these things are happening more frequently. Or maybe we are simply becoming more comfortable talking about them.
Either way, I have learned to pay more attention.
We live in an environment where it is incredibly easy for our attention to be directed for us. There are so many voices, opinions, expectations, and influences competing for our focus that we can move through an entire day reacting to what is being placed in front of us without ever stopping to notice what we are naturally being drawn toward.
For me, cultivating self awareness has made the difference.
The more connected I become to myself, the easier it is to notice when something resonates in a deeper way. I may not fully understand it at first, but I have learned to trust this experience.
That is what I love about the idea of the rabbit hole. It goes deep and you cannot see the entire path. It unfolds through a series of twist and turns.
Maybe you research the strange idea that has been circling in your mind and the rabbit hole takes you on a path.
The path leads you to take an action. That action then leads to other synchronicities which open opportunities you would have otherwise declined or never fully noticed.
When I look back over the last several years, some of the most meaningful things that have entered my life started this way. They were not part of a carefully constructed plan. They began with curiosity, a feeling, or something that caught my attention and made me want to look a little deeper.
I think that is part of what makes this chapter of my life so interesting. I am becoming much less concerned with needing to know exactly where everything is leading and much more interested in being present enough to notice what is showing up along the way..
Sometimes you just have to follow the white rabbit and see where it leads.
